What is Sushi For a Cure?

Sushi for a Cure is a labor of love, and we hope you will join us. It is modeled after an event created and hosted by my brother, David Kabaker, in Portland for the last five years.

David lost his wife, June, to lung cancer eight years ago. Together with Chef Ramon, June’s cousin, and an accomplished sushi chef, they created Sushi for a Cure as a way to honor June and her love of food, and all of the others in our lives who are touched by cancer.

We lost our parents too early in life - our mom was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 40, which metastasized in her bone marrow eight years later, and she passed at 48. Our dad had lymphoma and passed at 56.

Here are a few photos of June, Diane, and Ray.

David has raised over $100,000 for the American Cancer Society. In 2016, he received an award for being one of the top individual fundraisers in the nation (#11) under the Relay For Life program! I am so inspired by his efforts that I am bringing Sushi for a Cure to San Francisco!

Together with my husband, Andrew, and daughter, Lyla, we strive to continue the rich tradition of creating a wonderful evening in support of a great cause.

What can I expect at the event?

This will be an intimate gathering where you will eat all the sushi you possibly can, artistically prepared by Chef Ramon from Hawaii (don't be discouraged if you don't like sushi, there will be plenty other vegan and vegetarian food). You can also enjoy signature cocktails, listen to cool music, chat with interesting people, including my sister, Gayle Kabaker, New Yorker cover artist who created the beautiful Sushi for a Cure illustration (you could even walk away with your own signed print), and my brother and ACS fundraising champion, David, and his family.

Of course, the goal is to raise money for The American Cancer Society, and there will be several options to do that, including a silent auction, and the center piece of the evening - Fund a Cure - where you'll have the opportunity to donate at varying levels. Get ready for a fun evening!

Where will my money go?

Through the support of generous companies and individuals, Sushi for a Cure provides funding for much needed programs, services and research to save lives from cancer, provided by the American Cancer Society. ACS uses its century of experience and unwavering commitment to to save lives, celebrate lives, and lead the fight for a world without cancer.

Funds raised from this event will go towards the following:

  • Fund state-of-the-art cancer research projects

  • Deliver accurate and timely information to cancer patients, families and caregivers 24/7 through our toll-free hotline (1-800-227-2345)

  • Provide wigs and makeovers to women who have lost their hair and experienced skin changes due to cancer treatment

  • Educate the community in the East Bay about the importance of cancer screenings
